  Circuit de la Gorgendière

Strolling in the streets of St-Joseph-de-Beauce, archtecture  buffs and walkers will discover
the history and jewels of this charming town.

Joseph Fleury de la Gorgendière, first landlord in Beauce, arrived in Saint-Joseph in
1737. Founder of la Nouvelle-Beauce and colonisation advocate, the municipality and our
walking tour are named after him. This small agricultural village became the regional
administrative centre in 1857 and in 1859 the regional Court House opened. Both
events mark the beginning of the development of the town.

In the middle of the town, you have 5 buildings: the catholic church, the presbytery, the
college, the convent and the orphenage forming what is called:  site institutionnel. This site
was declared Québec Historic Site in 1985 and in 2006 St-Joseph-de-Beauce was one of the
five municipalities awarded the title of Cultural Capital of Canada.

Our leaflet 'Circuit de la Gorgendière' guides you in your visit of the site and of the
beautiful houses (45) in town. Learn more on the architecture, tales and history on our
  town.

The leaflet published by Ville de Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce in collaboration with
Marius-
Barbeau Museum, is sold at the museum, 6 $ taxes included.
